Bob Scott also attended the 1956 Nats, although his helmet wasn’t quite as elaborate as Johnny Schneider’s. Bob seemed to be a bit more concerned about what would happen if he lost his hat.  A lost aircraft sticker is on each side of the helmet.  Hopefully there were enough spare […]

The signatures and doodles on this pith helmet, dating to the 1956 Nats at the Naval Air Station in Dallas qualify it as a work of art. Guessing by the prominence given the name, I’m guessing this pith helmet was worn by John Schneider, a photographer for the magazine Air Trails. Credit: John […]

Model Airplane News commented in November 1952 that, “Trick hats and repairs in the hangar are part and parcel of all Nationals.” Trick hats indeed!  Look at what these two friends wore at the 1950 Nats. And it looks like the tradition continues!  Have you seen Evan Turner’s hat this […]

At the 1979 Nats, if you weren’t lucky enough to get one of the yellow “Official” caps with the logo printed on it, then you were even luckier because you got a host of other colors to choose from.   Between the bright, primary colors and the smiling ear of […]

A flying alligator?  Sounds like your next foamie project. I’m pretty sure that it’ll win the contest when alligators fly. Picture credit: 1986 Nats Cap, National Model Aviation Museum Permanent Collection. Donated by Bob Underwood, 2004.50.09.

Not everyone is in to the gliz and glam of Art Laneau’s style.  According to this picture, most pith helmets went undecorated. Undecorated, maybe, but clean not so much. Share a picture of your own personal shade by using the #NatsHats at the AMA’s Twitter account, or the museum’s Facebook. For […]

Beginning in 1948, the OQ-19 target drone was used for decades to train anti-aircraft gunners. The drone was catapult-launched and controlled by radio while gunners tried to shoot it down. Once contact with the radio system was lost, the model came to the ground under parachute before being retrieved. One […]
