50th Anniversary of the 1967 Nats & a New Addition

On 8/3/1967, Harold S. Auerhan, M.D., who placed 3rd in RC Scale, came home from the 1967 Nats at the Naval Air Station in Los Alamitos, CA, and posed for this picture, titling it: “The Happy Modeler Aug 3, 1967 with the prize-winning Great Lakes.”

In this black and white photo, a man is smiling widely, posing with a Great Lakes Trainer model airplane. He's holding a trophy and a RC transmitter.

Almost fifty years later in July 2017, the Great Lakes Trainer, the 1967 RC Scale 3rd place trophy and a 1980s transmitter (Dr. Auerhan continued to fly this model until 1989!) came to the museum, donated by Lee Anne Auerhan, M.D. in honor of her father, Harold S. Auerhan, M.D.

The Great Lakes Trainer is in orange and cream at the center of the shot. Behind it is the 1967 RC Scale 3rd place trophy and a 1980s transmitter.

Thank you Lee Ann for helping to grow the museum’s collection!

  1. That is a cool yesterday and today photo! Would like the today photo to have the same transmitter. Someone must have one they can donate to the museum. I now live less than a mile from the old Los Alamitos site. Thanks for the article.
