AMA has received an increasing number of reports of suspected radio-frequency signal interference affecting model aircraft operations. We recognize that these reports raise serious concerns for our members and the broader modeling community, particularly when they involve an unexpected loss of control. In response, AMA has convened a committee comprising commercial stakeholders, model aviation competitors, AMA staff, and Executive Council members to investigate these concerns.
The committee will review member reports, examine potential contributing factors, and look for patterns that may help identify the most likely cause or causes. Nearby cellular infrastructure and the technologies used in model radio systems are among the factors being considered, but the investigation will remain open to other explanations. Establishing a clearer understanding of these issues will help AMA identify appropriate solutions and determine where action from agencies, industry partners, or other entities might be needed.
Member experiences are an important part of this process. If you have experienced suspected signal interference, please send a report to amagov@modelaircraft.org including as much of the following information as possible:
- Club name: If applicable.
- Club number: AMA charter number, if applicable.
- Location: Field address/name
- Members: Approximate number of club members.
- Active receivers and transmitters: Approximately how many receivers and how many transmitters were powered on at the time of the interference.
- Transmitter and receiver type: Make and model of the equipment involved.
- Time of interference: Date and time, including the time zone.
- Person reporting interference: Your name and contact information.
You do not need to identify the source to submit a report. Specific observations will help the committee distinguish potential interference from other causes of signal loss or control problems.
