On June 15, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced that certain “toy drones” will be removed from the agency’s “Covered List,” which restricts listed devices and components from FCC approval for import and sale. The exact criteria can be reviewed on the FCC’s announcement and establish a narrow set of requirements, including a weight of 150 grams or less, limited range and altitude capabilities, and stipulations about the model’s connectivity features.
While this decision will likely provide some relief to certain toy manufacturers and importers, it is not expected to have an effect on AMA member operations because almost all models operated by AMA members exceed one or more of the FCC’s toy drone criteria. It is important to note that the FCC’s Covered List relates to equipment authorization and approval for importation and sale, not to pre-existing Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules on where and how the models can be flown.
Members with specific questions can reach out to AMA’s Government Affairs department for discussion. The email address is listed below. AMA will continue monitoring implementation and keep members updated if the effects of this decision should change in the future.
