“WAMS” – Western Area Modeling Society

On this episode of “Traveling with Lee”, I take you to Granbury, Texas to visit the new club field for “WAMS” – Western Area Modeling Society (formerly Weatherford Aero Modeling Society).

The Weatherford club lost their field around 3 years ago. Since then, the club President had been looking for a new place to call home with no luck. He was about to give up when he learned that the town of Granbury had a landfill that had been closed for many years and might have ample room for his club. After a few calls and meetings, WAMS negotiated a lease with the city and the rest is history.

Lawrence Harville, AMA District 8 VP, asked if I would drive up to visit the club and participate in the field dedication with members of WAMS and local government officials. To say that it was “hotter than blazes” last Monday is an understatement (105°). We kept everything short and sweet so that everyone could get out of the Texas heat to fly another day. The Mayor and his staff were very impressed with the new GeoTex runway (installed two weeks ago) and the flight demonstrations performed by members that morning. Looking forward to see how they fix this place up in the future.
