On Tuesday, March 24, H.R. 6460, a bill championed by AMA that will simplify altitude extensions and airspace permissions, has passed the U.S. House of Representatives and will move forward in the legislative process. H.R. 6460 was previously introduced in December 2025 on AMA’s behalf by Reps. Tracy Mann (R-Kansas, sponsor) and Sharice Davids (D-Kansas, co-sponsor) to address a 2018 legislative error for Class E airspace.
The bill must next pass the U.S. Senate without amendment before it can be signed into law by the president. If enacted, it would streamline authorization for routine operations in Class E airspace and might allow higher altitude approvals in Class G airspace, beyond the 700- or 1,200-foot above ground level (AGL) limits that have generally applied in recent years. Those who wish to view Tuesday’s proceedings can do so by watching the video below.
AMA extends its sincere appreciation to the House Subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure, Reps. Mann and Davids for their leadership and support throughout this process, and the U.S. House of Representatives as a whole. Although the bill must still proceed through the Senate, AMA believes that this legislative correction is well-positioned to advance through the next steps without major issues.
Bipartisan support is expected in the Senate, although government funding issues and ongoing conflicts might delay its consideration. AMA will continue to advocate for the bill’s passage and keep members informed, working to ensure that it delivers the restored flexibility our community has long requested.
