Ongoing Airspace Authorization Renewals

By Lucas Rodden, Government Affairs manager | lucasr@modelaircraft.org

The AMA staff continues to facilitate Airspace Authorization renewals. This marks the first major wave of renewals since the FAA instituted the current process in 2022.

A recap of an Airspace Authorization’s function is provided below.

  • Airspace Authorization Form 7711-1 grants standing permission to operate in an area designated as a “fixed site.” Usually this is within controlled airspace, where a pilot would otherwise require Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) authorization.
  • Form 7711 grants authorization to fly, but it does not affect Remote ID status, which is separate and handled through other processes. For Remote ID-specific questions and information, reach out to fria@modelaircraft.org.

While renewals are progressing smoothly, it is highly advised for those who manage fields that require Airspace Authorizations to inspect their documents for expiration dates and correct contact information. AMA will reach out in advance of the expiration date to verify details of renewal.

If your Airspace Authorization’s point of contact has changed from the original one that is printed on the document, please update that information by emailing amagov@modelaircraft.org to avoid delays in processing.

Altitude Authorization: Clarifying Documents

There has been confusion expressed by some regarding who the National Class G Altitude Authorization applies to and what documents are required. The National Authorization, which took effect in April 2025, can offer higher altitudes and occasionally reduced paperwork for events. However, it differs from many other authorizations that individual clubs and members have received in the past. The main authorization document is not tailored to a specific club, but it is issued directly to AMA, along with a log of approved sites.

These documents are readily available through links in the initial announcement email and through our FAQ For National Class G 7711 blog post at https://amablog.modelaircraft.org/amagov/2025/04/23/faq-for-national-class-g-7711, which covers common questions about the authorization.

If you are unsure whether your field meets the requirements or you need assistance with authorization documents, contact either amagov@modelaircraft.org or lucasr@modelaircraft.org. Please check with local club members and officers prior to contact to ensure clear communication.

Advocacy at the Local Level

AMA continues to represent model aviation interests with the FAA, Congress, and other stakeholders. While our main efforts focus on the national level for maximum impact, we also often assist clubs with state and municipal government conversations. The Flying Site Assistance Program at AMA supports clubs and individual members in their efforts to establish local flying sites. This often means engaging with the local municipal government to form partnerships or gain authorization for flights.

These conversations are highly nuanced and dependent on the airspace, land ownership, population density, availability of land, and, often, the personalities involved at the local level. AMA’s Flying Site Assistance Program can offer help with navigating government conversations and forming your group’s search committee, as well as additional tactics that have aided others in the past.
