UAS4STEM registration has opened, and there is still more than enough time to get your team signed up to compete in Spring 2023!
What is UAS4STEM?
UAS4STEM sponsored by Skydio engages participants ages 11-19 in project-based learning. Teams composed of 4 to 10 students and an adult mentor are tasked with designing and building their own Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) that can support a Search and Rescue (SAR) mission.
Youth participants develop professional skills such as, but not limited to, teamwork, public speaking, time management, and troubleshooting. Aside from the professional skills they learn, they also meet young AMA members with similar interests and make memories that last a lifetime!
What is the UAS4STEM Competition like?
Before competing, students complete a ground school course that introduces them to the fundamentals of flight, aviation safety, aviation meteorology, the National Airspace System, radio communication, and ethical airmanship.
The preliminary virtual competition will take place in April 2023. The virtual preliminary competition has two components: a proof-of-flight submission and a virtual Flight Readiness Review (FRR) presentation. Each team has a virtual appointment with judges to demonstrate all their hard work.
Top teams will receive an official invitation to the National Competition at AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin from July 24-July 30, 2023. Qualifying teams will need to prepare their UAS for a safety inspection, a FRR Briefing, and a flight mission.
