As we say goodbye to 2024, AMA Headquarters is gearing up for a new chapter. After a successful tenure of more than 5 years as executive director of AMA, Chad Budreau has decided to step down from his role. We’re grateful for his 15 years of service and dedication to the organization.

To ensure a smooth transition, Tyler Dobbs, AMA’s Government Affairs senior director, has been appointed as interim executive director. Tyler has worked closely with Chad during the past two months and brings experience and knowledge to this critical role. He will lead AMA until a new executive director is appointed.

Let’s discuss leadership transitions. How does your club approach the changeover? Do outgoing officers provide training to their successors? Are there standard operating procedures in place for each role?

If not, consider drafting them to ensure a smooth transition. Standard operating procedures provide a clear framework for how different roles and responsibilities should be carried out. This could include the following:

  • President: Overall leadership, strategic planning, and oversight
  • Vice President: Assisting the president and taking on specific responsibilities (e.g., fundraising and membership)
  • Secretary: Recordkeeping (e.g., meeting minutes) and communication with the club membership
  • Treasurer: Financial management, budgeting, and reporting

With many club elections approaching in December, now is an ideal time to prioritize the development of standard operating procedures.

A few months ago, we sent an email survey to clubs to gather feedback on their membership experience. It covered topics such as membership trends, attracting new members, growth initiatives, and keeping existing members engaged.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts! Your insights are crucial in helping us to better understand your club’s needs.

If you’d like to elaborate on any of your survey responses or have additional ideas, please don’t hesitate to reach out! You can reply to the survey or contact me directly at ilonam@modelaircraft.org.

One additional question we’d love to hear about: Does your club have an active outreach program to connect with your local community? We’re always looking for ways to help clubs thrive, and outreach efforts can be a great way to attract new members who share your passion for model aircraft.

Renewing your club charter with AMA is now easier than ever! You can now complete the process online at www.modelaircraft.org/charter-renewal.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Log in to the AMA website to ensure the system recognizes you as an authorized officer.
  2. Complete the online renewal form. It’s quick and straightforward.
  3. Renew early to avoid the rush! Although your club charter won’t expire until March 31, 2025, we can’t email your club charter and insurance certificates until February because of insurance processing.

This year has been tough. I lost my mom, my beloved dog, Piper, and some cherished friends. It’s a reminder to seize the day and chase your dreams. Don’t let life slip by. Go fly!
