FAI World Championships coming to Muncie

The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) and the National Model Pylon Racing Association (NMPRA) are pleased to announce that 10 teams will be participating in the 2022 FAI F3D/F3E World Championships for Pylon Racing Model Aircraft, which is scheduled to take place July 8-12, 2022, at the International Aeromodeling Center in Muncie, Indiana.

We appreciate those teams that have made the commitment to attend and hope that additional countries will decide to participate.

The event organizer will take any and all precautions to provide a safe and comfortable environment for those attending the World Championships. 

Bulletin 2 will be released soon and will contain additional information regarding any COVID-19 restrictions, shipping information, and information about local lodging, food, and other amenities. 

We look forward to a successful and exciting competition. 

AMA has announced which pilots and callers will be representing Team USA.

The youngest pilot is Junior Leo Nordell. Leo, age 15, has been flying for six years and Dennis Cranfill will serve as his caller. Leo will compete in F3D with his A1 Composites Vector.

Also competing in F3D as a Senior will be Gino Del Ponte, Randy Bridge, and AJ Hemken. Tom Scott will serve as team manager. “Rocket” Ray Brown will be serving as a caller.

Competing in F3E will be Gary Freeman Jr., Mike Helsel, and Bruce Brown.

Gary Freeman Jr., age 43, has been a systems engineer for LMC for the past 22 years. His interest in model airplanes began at age 3. He has competed on several world championship teams for F3D and F3E. He was part of the gold medal-winning Team USA F3D in 2009. He currently holds the US record for F3E.

Mike Helsel has been flying for 70 years. His aeromodeling accomplishments include third place in the FAI Sopwith Cup 1973; first-place finishes in the AMA Nats Q-40 in 2000, 2001, 2005; first place in Q-500 at the 2005, 2011, 2019 Nats; and he is an NMPRA Hall of Fame member.

Trey Witte and Mike Parker will be callers for the F3E pilots.
