FAA Registration 101

FAA Registration is required for all recreational flyers. To register with the FAA, visit the FAADroneZone. Recreational operators can use the same registration number for all their UAS which includes model aircraft. FAA Registration for recreational flyers is $5 for a 3-year term from the day you originally registered.

The National Defense Authorization Act of 2018 restored the FAA’s registration rule with respect to model aircraft and recreational flying.  It is one of the eight statutory requirements outlined in the exception for limited recreational operations of unmanned aircraft under 49 U.S.C. § 44809. The intent for registration is for the FAA or law enforcement to be able to identify the aircraft to its owner.  Please be sure to place your FAA registration number on the exterior of your aircraft and ensure it is legible upon visual inspection.

If you registered before December 12, 2017, the FAA extended your registration to December 12, 2020. The earliest expiration date is Dec. 12. To check your expiration date, you will have to log into your account on the FAADroneZone. When logged in, you should be able to view your certificate on your user dashboard.

Please be aware of scam FAA registration websites that are attempting to charge more than $5.00.
