“Sense and Avoid”… the Holy Grail for UAS

The ability for an unmanned aircraft to Sense and Avoid, the equivalent of ‘Seeing and Avoiding’ other aircraft required by regulation for aircraft operating under FAA’s visual flight rules (VFR), has been said to be the Holy Grail for allowing UAS to operate beyond the visual line of sight of the operator. Hundreds of researchers, corporations, government contractors and educational institutions are working on creating a robust and reliable sense and avoid system. And though we are getting closer to having a certifiable system, much like the Holy Grail, sense and avoid remains an elusive treasure.
