U.S. Senator James Inhofe (R-Okla.), a senior member on the Senate Armed Services Committee, and U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), also a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, announced today the formation of the Senate Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Caucus. The mission of the bipartisan caucus will be to educate Senators and staff on the capabilities and concerns of UAS and to work closely together to best shape the UAS policymaking process.
Senator Inhofe was the primary sponsor in the introduction of the amendment that created the “Special Rule for Model Aircraft” in the FAA reauthorization bill. The bill ultimately passed last February as the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012. Senator Inhofe’s expertise, aviation background and knowledge will contribute substantially to the development of reasonable and responsible national policy regarding the integration of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into the national airspace.
