Congressional Action Mounts as UAS Privacy/Security Concerns Intensify

As the FAA struggles in its efforts to enable the operation of commercial and public use unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), anxiety over privacy and national security issues continues to escalate. Over the past several months more than a dozen congressional initiatives have been enacted to address these issues and further congressional action is inevitable as public concern intensifies. Pressure placed on the FAA to address privacy issues along with other administrative entanglements have delayed the release of the agency’s proposed sUAS rule creating a time crunch in meeting the congressional mandate to integrate UAS into the National Airspace System by September 2015.

  1. Great list of actions. I was very pleased to read the FAA Modernization and Reform Act Sec 336 Special Rule for Model Aircraft and see there was no wording limiting altitude to 400 ft. I have been away from fly RC models and the AMA for close to 20 years. Recent improvements in electric engines and all the benefits it brings to the hobby have spiked my interest again.

I have rejoined the AMA for the great work you do in protecting our hobby. Keep up the battle to keep our hobby alive.
