Congress Looks to Ban DJI Drones

The House of Representatives recently passed a bill to essentially ban DJI drones in the United States. This bill is currently making its way through the Senate and could later be signed into law. The proposed legislation would add DJI to a list maintained by the Federal Communications Commission under the Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act of 2019, restricting DJI’s drones from operating on the communications infrastructure in the US.

There are also proposals in Congress that could increase the cost of our UAS. These proposals include an increase in tariffs on Chinese drones and parts. Also, a prohibition on federal money being used to purchase foreign-made UAS will take effect in 2025. This prohibition will have an impact on Civil Air Patrol, JROTC, and educational UAS programs.

AMA continues to meet with Congress and the Department of Defense regarding these issues, hopefully will find common sense solutions that will reduce the burden on our community.
