Northeast Lakeview College Helps Students “Take Flight” at Local Drone Building Camp

After the success of last year’s inaugural underwater robotics camp, Northeast Lakeview College is turning to the skies this summer with its “Take Flight” drone building and flying camp.

“We’ve been wanting to do something like this for a long time. We have a couple teachers who are active with it, so we decided to just go for it,” said Katie Robinson, Northeast Lakeview College community programs specialist. “It’s an up-and-coming technology, and we want to share that through this camp.”

The drone camp runs 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 10-13 for a price of $185 at Northeast Lakeview, 1200 Kitty Hawk Road in Universal City.

Instructors John Muniz, from Alamo Heights Independent School District, and Earl Bullock, a retired teacher working through Northeast Lakeview, have signed on to teach the drone-flying class.
Students will build a mini-drone from scratch, safe enough to fly indoors, according to a course description. Students will work together to design and build their own obstacle course challenges, present their work in front of an audience of peers and adults, and end the week by playing with their new drones on the challenges they have created.

Each student will receive a drone do-it-yourself starter kit for assembly.

The drones are a basic model, capable of a range of up to 65 feet and the ability to perform 360-degree flips with a 5-to-10-minute flight time.

Robinson said they intend to keep the course simple.

“This may be the first time using a drone for some of these kids,” she said. “There may be some students who have some experience, but that’s not a necessity.”

The camp has no enrollment limit. Parents can enroll students through the Northeast Lakeview College website at alamo.edu/NLC/NLCCommunity, or through its “Northeast Lakeview College Community Programs” page on Facebook.
