Reaching for the sky at Youth Fly Day

Andrew Richerson performed a few barrel rolls with the model plane he was flying, but they weren’t on purpose.

“I was turning and I sped up,” said the 16-year-old Arroyo Grande resident, a recent transplant from Poland. “It was very fun. I was very happy I had my buddy to help me.” “I had a hard time to turn left, and when I got it, it was nice,” he added.

Richerson was one of several dozen youths who participated in Youth Fly Day at the Santa Maria Elks/Unocal Event Center last Saturday. The free event was hosted by the Tri-Valley RC Modelers, a group founded in the 1960s that boasts more than 70 local members.
