My first SEFF was three years ago. This year, I talked my good friend, Fitz Walker, to make the trek with me from Texas. He attended SEFF over 20 years ago and wanted to see what has changed all these years. Another nice treat was that my son, Austin, was able to get out of college early and he made the drive from Florida to Georgia to catch up with us.
Due to our work schedules, we could only attend Thursday thru Saturday at the event. The good news was that the weather Thursday and Friday was absolutely excellent and we were able to take advantage of it and fly a lot of our aircraft. The highlight for me was watching my son enjoy his new Freewing F-22 that I was able to deliver to him in my trailer.
Bob Barnard is the contest director for SEFF and he is one of the most friendly hosts I’ve ever met. He popped into our tent on Saturday and shared the news that over 245 pilots were registered this year – the most he can remember since he’s been running the event. Next year is the 25th anniversary and he has a LOT of exciting plans for next year. It will be much BIGGER & BETTER than ever before. If you have never attended or haven’t been in a while, I highly recommend you follow their website and register as soon as possible. Fitz and I hung out with the “Virginia Delegation” and are already discussing plans to combine forces and consider a larger ‘circus tent’ to accommodate everyone.
Huge shoutout to all the vendors & sponsors who help keep the event alive & the raffle prize inventory full. I also want to thank my fellow modelers who came out to show off their amazing aircraft and keep this hobby alive. And finally, a nod to my good friend & co-host of the RC Roundtable Podcast, Terry Dunn, who pulled off an amazing secret trip from Wisconsin to SEFF to surprise me & Fitz. Always good times when the three of us can get together and fly. Look for our SEFF podcast on our website (rcroundtable.com) and social media channels (@RCRoundtable).
