The Converse Flying Eagles held its annual Egg Drop competition. Pilots participated with the intent to drop a raw egg closest to a target marked on the ground. It is one of the club’s more entertaining events, with cheering and heckling encouraged.
The club provided lunch before the competition. Several members were close to the target with makeshift egg-holding devices that beat some of the more elaborate and store-bought egg-dropping devices. This year’s winner was Steve Eagle, who “laid” his egg 5 feet from the target.

Last year we had two women join our club to learn how to fly gliders. This year, mother and daughter Tracy and Madalynn Pund competed in the 2023 FAI Spacemodeling World Championships for the event of Radio Control Rocket Gliders, in Austin, Texas. In the female category, Madalynn (daughter) placed first and Tracy placed second. They launched RC gliders into the air using rocket motors, achieved a specific amount of time in the air, and had a bonus for landing in a specified area.
Tracy grew up launching model rockets with her dad and brother and is a part of a local rocketry club based in Holland, Indiana. She has competed in many rocketry competitions. This year, Tracy and Madalynn have taken on an event combining rockets with RC gliders.
From Kinson Jones, who attended Camp AMA 2023:
This summer, I had the most amazing experience attending Camp AMA! I made new friends and furthered my love of model aeronautics. We learned how to fly a Control Line airplane, something I had never done before. One evening, we flew indoors in the Ball State University gym. That was a lot of fun and something I hadn’t done much before.
The National Model Aviation Museum was a highlight. It was neat to see the progression of models throughout the years. We also got to spend a day at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. It was amazing to see so many cool military aircraft up close. The night flying was really amazing to watch. I am very thankful to all who made this possible.
James M. Hubbell reported:
The ShoMe ProBro, held in Bolivar, Missouri, had 27 registered pilots and several days of great weather. The flying began on Thursday morning. After a day of flying, we had pizza for dinner and caught up with old friends. Flying continued on Friday with lunch at the field and dinner at a local restaurant.
Saturday saw the largest number of pilots. Lunch was followed by a raffle with lots of great prizes, including some airplanes built by a founding member, Chuck Persival, that were provided by a family member. New people got an introductory flight on a buddy box.
Kurt Larson, from Tinley Creek RC in Matteson, Illinois, reported:
We recently hosted an event for a local Scout troop. It was a positive event for everyone. We also attended an Expo hosted by the Cook County Forest Preserve, highlighting our hobby and our extreme appreciation for the RC field the preserve provides and maintains.
