AMA District VI News June 2024

There were no submissions of past events again this month, so I am going to share this very worthwhile submission from Frank Noyes.

The Lake Ozark Radio Control Society has been conducting its Cancer Fly for the last 15 years to raise money to fight cancer. The club supplies the prizes and food for this event, with help from the local American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life team.

This year’s event will be held on June 1 at the Don Harrison Memorial Field near Eldon, Missouri. All money collected at this event will go to the American Cancer Society. Last year, the club raised $4,857.

The club has been blessed with many donations of airplanes, kits, and RC equipment to enhance our raffle. Some of it was donated by participants who have traveled to the event from afar. The 31 pilots who attended in the past made all of this possible.

If you want to have a great day of fun, flying, and great food, please come join in our efforts to stamp out cancer. The field address is 26 Porter Road, Eldon MO 65026, or check out our Facebook page, “Lake Ozark Radio Control Society.”

On a more personal note, I attended the celebration for the Kansas City RC Association’s (KCRC) 70th anniversary that had 54 people in attendance. We had a nice Italian meal before the ceremonies started.

AMA Executive Vice President Randy Cameron was the speaker of the night, and club President Jon Britt had a wonderful slideshow showing the milestones of the club, plus pictures from every decade along the way.

Next was the surprise of the evening! I presented John Midgorden with the Carl & Beth Goldberg Vital People Award. Unknown to most of the club, Phil Lucido and Jon Britt were the co-nominators. This very prestigious award is voted on by the entire AMA Executive Council.

Next, we were treated to a video of the 2023 flying season, created by John. After a very large raffle, the evening ended.

I will include your club’s event, or even just a fun day of flying, in my column. Simply write a 150-word description of the event, along with a couple of pictures. Email it to me at AMAdistrictVI@modelaircraft.org with the word “magazine” in the subject line. Pictures must be at least 500 KB standalone jpg files.

Don’t forget, only days away is the AMA National Fun Fly, held in Muncie, Indiana, on June 28-30, 2024. The event is free this year to all pilots. The T-shirts will cost you $15 each. It is best to preregister on the AMA website (www.modelaircraft.org/funfly); however, it is not mandatory. I look forward to seeing you there!
