AMA District VI News July 2020

Happy 244th birthday America! I hope that we can get out and celebrate.

I am writing this on April 28. Kansas City, Missouri, has extended the lock-down until May 16, and that will only be a partial opening. The experts, are saying it will be July before there are any signs of normalcy. The news and even commercials are only about corona-virus. I guess it’s ironic that I am writing about the exact thing I am complaining about.

I did not receive any submissions this month, so I am going to do a story on my local club, the Northern Knights Radio Control Club of Kansas City. We are a diverse club, with a wide range of disciplines and ages, both male and female. We have had a lot of new people join the club lately.

One of the newcomers is Amber Rios. She is an outdoor-type girl who likes fishing, biking, gardening, and walking in the woods. She started dating Tony Becerra, one of our members, who is at the field several times a week. Being an outside girl, she would always come to the field with him. Amber really never gave flying much thought, she just enjoyed being outdoors with her guy.

When Valentine’s Day came along, Tony bought Amber a Horizon Hobby S Cub. It worked. She was excited and told him that an airplane would last a lot longer than flowers. So off they went to the field to try it out.

Amber only needed minimal instruction and loved every minute in the air. A mere two months later, Amber is having a great time and already flying other people’s airplanes to determine what she would like to get next. She is also excited to join in the ranks of club level combat.

I am sure Amber will do well with this. Her enthusiasm is very high and fun to watch. Amber, welcome to the world of model aviation!

Because of COVID-19, I expect the submissions to be nonexistent because of all the canceled events. Therefore, I am making the following request. Sent me a short write-up and a few pictures from your club’s event from last year. Heck, it doesn’t even need to be a club event, it could be a short write-up of your club and pictures from the flying and camaraderie of your club’s weekends flying.

To see your club in the magazine, simply send me a submission via email to AMADistrictVI.modelaircraft.org with the word “magazine” in the subject line. To this point, I have put every submission received into the magazine. I promise to continue doing that even if I am drowning in submissions! I will end by asking you to introduce someone to model aviation regardless if it is on a buddy box or on your simulator.
