AMA District VI News June 2017

I received an email from Jeff Schmidt in February requesting that I visit Nodaway RC Flyers Club, in Maryville, Missouri. I was able to get there on March 18, where we had a lunch meeting with Casey Schmidt, club president, and other club officers to discuss the new flying site that the city is proposing.

One of the club’s concerns was the site’s proximity to the local airport. The club has a good relationship with the city, which I expect will continue as they work to develop the new flying site together.

It was a beautiful day, so after visiting the proposed location, we went out to the club’s current flying site and did some flying. It was a productive day. I enjoyed hanging out with the members of the Nodaway RC Flyers Club, and I hope that they invite me back soon to fly at their new location.

While researching and putting together some information for a presentation I plan to do, I collected some data that I thought was interesting and wanted to pass it along—especially since no one sent me any pictures in the past few months.

The AMA has nearly 200,000 members, of which roughly 60,000 are Youth members. AMA also has approximately 2,400 clubs. District VI has 392 clubs, and more than 17,000 members, of which 603 are Leader Members. There are 207 Life Members, 6,360 Adult members, 4,145 Senior members, 6,091 Youth members, 202 Extra Family members, 176 Park Pilot members, and 64 Three-Month Trial memberships.

The state breakdown is as follows:
• Missouri: 3,309 members; 98 clubs
• Illinois: 7,002 members; 138 clubs
• Indiana: 4,875 members; 124 clubs
• Kentucky: 1,995 members; 32 clubs

There are 67 other members who have addresses not in one of the district’s states. I expect they are snowbirds and members who might have recently moved and are still listed as District VI members.

During The Toledo Show: R/C Model Expo, I had the honor of handing out a couple of the Take off And Grow (TAG) grant checks, and an Apprentice aircraft to the clubs. This photo was taken at the District III, VI, and VII meeting held during the show. I am in the photo, along with Bob Gautreaux. Bob accepted a check from the AMA for $500 and an Apprentice model.

If you would like your club or event highlighted in the District VI column, feel free to send me a write-up and some pictures to include here.

Let’s go flying!
