balsa wood exhibit!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Balsa wood is an integral part of building model airplanes.\u00a0 To allow our visitors to learn more about this, we\u2019re in the process of installing an exhibit in the hands-on gallery exploring the life cycle of balsa wood.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the how the exhibit progressed.<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 A stylized balsa tree graphic was created.\u00a0 During this process, various designs were projected onto the wall to get a sense of size and space.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 The components of the trees were cut out of Sintra material, sanded and finished before being installed with the help of nails and Velcro.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_832\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-832\" style=\"width: 245px\" class=\"wp-caption for skylights was reinvented as an exhibit case.\u00a0 Care was taken to install it flush against the wall, but in a way that doesn\u2019t make it obvious.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"caption-attachment-834\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shelves installed into dome to hold examples of balsa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0 Intern Samantha Weaver researched how balsa trees grow and the various cuts and grains that are available from the wood.<\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0 She turned all of this research into fun facts for the exhibit and created labels.<\/p>\n<figure
