This is the\u00a0sixth post in a week-long series celebrating National Preservation Week.\u00a0 NMAM blog posts in this series will discuss how to preserve your own modeling history.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Padded hangers are one of the best ways of storing a piece of historic clothing.\u00a0 Most of the museum\u2019s collection of jackets documenting competitions and other events are stored hanging on a special rack in the collections storage.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a pictorial guide to a creating a quick padded hanger.<\/p>\n

Supply list:<\/strong>
\nUnbleached muslin<\/a>
\nCotton batting<\/a>
\nHanger \u2013 not a metal one, preferably one with the widest arms as you can find.
\nNeedle and cotton thread
\nScissors
\nLaundry detergent<\/p>\n

Steps:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Step one: Wash out the unbleached muslin.\u00a0 (I used Orvus Paste<\/a>, but a regular laundry detergent can also be used.\u00a0 Just make sure you rinse\u00a0out the cloth\u00a0really well.)<\/p>\n

\nStep two: Cut the fabric to the shape desired.<\/p>\n

\nStep three: Using cotton batting wrap the hanger to create extra width for the jacket to rest on.<\/p>\n

\nStep four: Stuff the fabric sleeve with batting, like you would a pillow, making sure to get on, around and under the arms of the hanger.<\/p>\n

\nStep five:\u00a0 Try the jacket on the hanger to make sure it isn\u2019t over- or under- stuffed.<\/p>\n

Step five: Finish sewing closed.<\/p>\n
