This is the second post in a week-long series celebrating National Preservation Week.\u00a0 NMAM blog posts in this series will discuss how to preserve your own modeling history.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The instructions for your first RC system.\u00a0 Your first AMA membership card.\u00a0 Photographs of the trophy presentation for your Nats win.\u00a0 The notes & research from the three years you spent building a scale model of a P-63.\u00a0 All these things contain memories of your modeling career, as well as information about your life and the world around you.\u00a0 Some simple changes to how you care for and handle these items will help them last a long time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Start off by:<\/strong>
\n1.\u00a0 Washing & thoroughly drying your hands before handling any documents or photographs you want to preserve.
\n2.\u00a0 Try to handle them only around the edges.\u00a0 If it is larger, or fragile and needs more support do so, but keep your touch gentle.
\n3.\u00a0 Explain what they are.\u00a0 Use a soft lead pencil (like a 6B, which is available where most art supplies are sold) to write the basic info on the back of the photograph or document.\u00a0 Stay away from using ink, as it can stain the front of the photograph, or bleed through paper.
\n4.\u00a0 Don\u2019t fold or roll the items to store them.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0\u00a0Don\u2019t use any adhesive. Put them in a scrapbook using photo corners.\u00a0<\/p>\n

6.\u00a0\u00a0Keep them away from lots of sunlight and dust, as well as food and drink (boxes are great).
\n7.\u00a0 Keep them in an environment where you consistently feel comfortable \u2013 it shouldn\u2019t be too hot, or too cold.
\n8.\u00a0 Photocopy any articles, especially newspaper articles, that you want to keep.\u00a0 Newspaper is horribly acidic and will become discolored and brittle over time.<\/p>\n

Go a bit further:<\/strong>
\n1.\u00a0 Purchase acid-free folders and boxes from a museum products supplier like Gaylord<\/a>\u00a0 or Hollinger Metal Edge<\/a>.
\n2.\u00a0 Use acid-free paper between pages or photographs.\u00a0 (Tip: check out your local office supply store and look for high-quality business papers that are said to be \u201cacid-free and lignin-free\u201d)<\/p>\n
