Photo Cecelia Pettigrew.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/amablog.modelaircraft.org\/amamuseum\/2016\/07\/22\/chaffees-1930-boeing-p-12b\/\">(See here for more photos!)<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Boeing P-12B had just begun operations for the United States Military in 1930.\u00a0 That same year that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.modelaircraft.org\/sites\/default\/files\/files\/ChaffeeWilliamBillHenry.pdf\">William Chaffee<\/a> built a scale version for the Airplane Model League of America (AMLA) Airplane Model Contest.<\/p>\n<p>Chaffee\u2019s version has the required 24\u201d wingspan of models entered into the AMLA\u2019s scale contest, and, as also required, was built from plans approved by the AMLA.\u00a0 He put in 500 hours\u2019 worth of work into the model, his attention to detail including working control surfaces moved by mechanisms in the cockpit.\u00a0 Out of the 100 points total each model could earn, Chaffee\u2019s P-12B got 97 &#8211; and 1st place.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2892\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2892\" style=\"width: 595px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amablog-modelaircraft-org.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/05\/WChaffee-1930AMLAContest-1stplace-certificate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2892\" src=\"https:\/\/amablog-modelaircraft-org.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/05\/WChaffee-1930AMLAContest-1stplace-certificate.jpg\" alt=\"Bill Chaffee's Certificate of Distincition for his 1st place win in Senior Scale at the 3rd National Contest held by the AMLA.\" width=\"595\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/amablog-modelaircraft-org.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/05\/WChaffee-1930AMLAContest-1stplace-certificate.jpg 788w, https:\/\/amablog-modelaircraft-org.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/05\/WChaffee-1930AMLAContest-1stplace-certificate-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2892\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bill Chaffee earned 97 out of 100 possible points for the detail and workmanship he put into the Boeing P-12B.
