These processes are starting to be implemented following a court order which overturned certain tariffs throughout 2025 that are paid under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. This procedure rollout from CBP marks the first effort to implement the refund system following this court decision.

As the majority of hobbyist UAS and components are currently imported from overseas, the procedures outlined by CBP will be especially important to many retailers that are used by the modeling community. Commercial importers and Customs brokers can find the full press release and procedures on CBP’s website. Application and participation within the system is not automatic for registered entities, who must submit formal requests. As this is the first phase of an extremely large and complex refund system, the speed of application review and dispersing of refunds is unknown, though projected in the 60-90 day window.

CBP has noted that announcements concerning the system and processes will be ongoing, and that relevant commercial entities should check in regularly. The CBP simplified fact sheet can be found here for further reading.

To remain current with the most recent government-related news, regularly visit the AMA Government Affairs blog.
