In May 2011, would-be terrorist Rezwan Ferdaus of Asland, Mass. planned to convert a radio control model aircraft into a weaponized drone and fly it into the US Capitol building. The FBI learned of his suspicious activity through contacts in the aeromodeling community and ultimately arrested Ferdaus before he could act out his planned attack. Counterterrorism experts and model aircraft enthusiasts have said it would be nearly impossible to inflict large-scale damage using model planes.<\/p>\n
Ferdaus pleaded guilty in July to attempting to provide material support to terrorists and attempting to damage and destroy federal buildings with an explosive. As part of a plea agreement between prosecutors and Ferdaus\u2019 attorney, both sides agreed to the 17-year sentence now being imposed.<\/p>\n
