AMA members operate under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations of Unmanned Aircraft (USC 44809). This guide will detail those requirements as well as cover Remote Identification requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing you need to do is to make sure that you understand what it means to fly recreationally. Recreational flight is simply flying for fun or personal enjoyment. Flying for any other reason is not considered to be recreational. Operations outside of recreational flying must take place under Part 107, the default regulation for operating any type of Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) weighing less than 55 pounds. The only caveat to this rule would be for those flying for educational purposes. Institutions of higher education, JROTC programs, and educational programming through AMA clubs can all fly under USC 44809.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> Keep in mind the FAA uses the term \u2018drone\u2019 to describe all types of UAS, including model aircraft. This is often confusing for those who fly traditional model aircraft.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>USC 44809 RULES FOR RECREATIONAL FLIERS<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"list-style-type:1\">\n<li>Fly only for recreational purposes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.modelaircraft.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/100.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AMA\u2019s Safety Guidelines<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fly your aircraft within your visual line-of-sight (VLOS) or within the VLOS of your spotter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give way to, and do not interfere with, any manned aircraft.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obtain airspace authorization before operating in controlled airspace.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Receive this authorization via <a href=\"https:\/\/amablog.modelaircraft.org\/amagov\/2021\/02\/12\/what-is-laanc-and-how-to-use-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LAANC<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/faadronezone-access.faa.gov\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DroneZone<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact <a href=\"mailto:amagov@modelaircraft.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">amagov@modelaircraft.org<\/a> if you fly at an AMA chartered club\u2019s flying site and need to receive this authorization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fly at or below 400 feet in uncontrolled (Class G) airspace unless you&#8217;re flying at a waivered AMA sanctioned event.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For help understanding the differences in types of airspace, <a href=\"https:\/\/amablog.modelaircraft.org\/amagov\/2022\/03\/15\/flying-in-controlled-vs-uncontrolled-airspace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">click here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) and carry proof of test passage. The test can be taken for free at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.modelaircraft.org\/trust\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.modelaircraft.org\/trust<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a current FAA registration and mark the exterior of your aircraft with the registration number. To register with the FAA, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/faadronezone-access.faa.gov\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">faadronezone-access.faa.gov<\/a>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For help registering with FAA, use <a href=\"https:\/\/amablog.modelaircraft.org\/amagov\/2022\/08\/09\/update-to-the-faa-dronezone-and-registration-renewal-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AMA\u2019s step-by-step guided walkthrough<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FAA registration costs only $5 and needs renewed every three years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You do not need to register your aircraft if it weighs at or less than .55 pounds (250 grams).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>REMOTE ID<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FAA published the <a href=\"https:\/\/amablog.modelaircraft.org\/amagov\/2021\/01\/01\/summary-of-faas-final-rule-on-remote-id\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Final Rule for Remote ID<\/a> in January 2021. Recreational fliers are now required to comply with Remote ID requirements. There are three ways to comply with Remote ID, which are outlined below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"list-style-type:1\">\n<li><strong>Standard Remote ID<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Broadcast equipment is built into your Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) by the manufacturer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Broadcast Modules<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If your UAS is older, homebuilt, or is purchased without Standard Remote ID, a broadcast module option is available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA)<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fly at an established FRIA site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Note:<\/em><\/strong> AMA is submitting FRIA applications on behalf of AMA clubs.
