{"id":2624,"date":"2015-09-14T14:13:07","date_gmt":"2015-09-14T18:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amablog.modelaircraft.org\/amagov\/?p=2624"},"modified":"2015-09-15T08:28:57","modified_gmt":"2015-09-15T12:28:57","slug":"ama-responds-to-the-faas-drone-sighting-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amablog.modelaircraft.org\/amagov\/2015\/09\/14\/ama-responds-to-the-faas-drone-sighting-report\/","title":{"rendered":"AMA Responds to the FAA&#8217;s Drone Sighting Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-canvas-width=\"421.060083333333\">The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) has released a detailed analysis of the data alluded to in the FAA&#8217;s August 12 press release, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/news\/updates\/?newsId=83445&amp;omniRss=news_updatesAoc&amp;cid=101_N_U\">&#8220;Pilot Reports of Close Calls with Drones Soar in 2015.&#8221;\u00a0<\/a> A close examination of the 764 records reveals a more complex picture of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)activity in the United States than initial headlines suggested. There are military crashes and a UFO sighting in the data. Only a fraction of the records were legitimately reported \u201cclose calls\u201dand \u201cnear misses.\u201d Some didn\u2019t involve drones at all.AMA&#8217;s analysis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.modelaircraft.org\/gov\/docs\/AMAAnalysis-Closer-Look-at-FAA-Drone-Data_091415.pdf\">&#8220;A Closer Look at the FAA&#8217;s Drone Data,&#8221;\u00a0<\/a>was included\u00a0in\u00a0Monday morning&#8217;s USA Today: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2015\/09\/13\/drone-reports-faa-close-call-near-miss-academy-model-aeronautics-\/72064388\/\">&#8220;Drone hobbyists find flaws in &#8220;close call&#8221; reports to FAA from other aircraft.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>While AMA works closely with the FAA, and we continue to consider the agency a partner in promoting model aircraft and consumer drone safety, our report concludes that the FAA could have done a better job of presenting their data in a more factually accurate manner. By using misleading language in its press release, releasing only preliminary reports and not critically analyzing those reports, the FAA&#8217;s report only served, at best, to paint a cloudy and less than accurate picture and raises concerns that simply may not be realistic.<\/p>\n<p>Today, AMA distributed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.modelaircraft.org\/gov\/docs\/AMAAnalysis-PressRelease09-11-2015.pdf\">press release<\/a> to the media with its findings. Additionally, AMA sent a letter to U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and the FAA Administrator Michael Huerta.
