But It&#8217;s Not What You Think."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"avatar exit_trigger_set\" style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/johngoglia\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"color: #666666;\" src=\"https:\/\/0.gravatar.com\/avatar\/c39a6e7ead4811c297c0c7d9269943f6?s=136&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D136&amp;r=G\" alt=\"John Goglia\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"user_name exit_trigger_set\" style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/johngoglia\/\">John Goglia<\/a>\u00a0FORBES\u00a0<span class=\"title\" style=\"color: #666666;\">Contributor<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The FAA\u2019s list of 194 drone sightings reported to it this year were obtained by the<a style=\"color: #555555;\" href=\"https:\/\/mobile.nytimes.com\/blogs\/bits\/2014\/11\/26\/new-f-a-a-report-tallies-drone-sightings-highlighting-safety-issues\/?action=click&amp;contentCollection=Technology&amp;module=RelatedCoverage&amp;region=Marginalia&amp;pgtype=article&amp;_r=0&amp;referrer=\">\u00a0New York Times<\/a>\u00a0and published yesterday.\u00a0 Contrary to what one would expect from all the media hype about the risks posed to manned aircraft by today\u2019s popular quadcopters, the FAA\u2019s list of sightings does not support the position that these small hobby helicopters \u2013 including the most popular Phantom models manufactured by DJI \u2013 pose a significant danger to aircraft. \u00a0\u00a0What the list does support is that the FAA is keeping a record of all drone sightings it receives regardless of whether the reports indicate a safety problem or not. In fact, some of the reports listed conclude that there was no actual or potential safety impact.\u00a0 The list contains a number of reports of quadcopters operating overhead but no indication of any safety impact at all to persons, property or manned aircraft. \u00a0It\u2019s not clear to me what purpose this list serves the FAA.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One report included in the FAA\u2019s list was made by the US Coast Guard in Hawaii and states that \u201can Admiral\u2019s residence at Diamondhead Lighthouse was overflown by a DJI Phantom quadcopter UAS operated by a photographer.
