They Grand Valley State STEPS camp in Grand Rapids Michigan is a girls summer camp that focuses on model aviation and the importance of math, science, and engineering classes. We visited the second session of this camp on June 28th for their graduation night. The 44 girls in attendance were flying their planes for the first time with the help of local clubs Warped Wings and the West Michigan Soaring Society. While at the awards ceremony Camp AMA attendee and Warped Wings club member Tristen Lobbezoo got the opportunity to talk to the girls about Camp AMA and his love for model airplanes. The AMA education department then offered a scholarship to one of the girls from the STEPS camp to join us next year to continue their flying at Camp AMA 2013. We are very excited about the opportunity to have one of these girls join us next summer. STEPS camp director Sara Maas will be making the final selection for the girl chosen. It was great seeing so many girl pilots fly planes that they designed and built. We would like to extend a special thank you to both clubs for volunteering to make this program possible. Please visit Grand Valley State STEPS Camp for more information.
