I\u2019d like to <\/span>thank the members of the\u00a0Sentral Illinois Radio Society (SIRS)\u00a0model club for its efforts in promoting\u00a0our hobby. The following information\u00a0was submitted by John Cralley, the\u00a0club\u2019s communications officer.\u00a0Great job.<\/p>\n

Each year the AMA designates a\u00a0day as National Model Aviation Day\u00a0and asks its clubs to do something to\u00a0celebrate and promote model aviation.\u00a0This year, Saturday, August 13, was\u00a0selected for this event.<\/p>\n

For a number of years, the SIRS club\u00a0has been assisted by the Bloomington\u00a0St. Mary\u2019s Church School Boy Scout\u00a0Troop 20 in conducting Pylon Races.<\/p>\n

The races involve flying identical\u00a0model airplanes at speeds sometimes\u00a0exceeding 100 mph around a triangular\u00a0race course at our airfield. The troop\u00a0members serve as judges to verify that\u00a0each model does not turn short of a\u00a0pylon and instead flies around each one\u00a0during the race. This is a somewhat\u00a0thankless, but absolutely essential, task\u00a0that I believe counts as a community\u00a0service for the Scouts.<\/p>\n

This year for our AMA National\u00a0Model Aviation Day activity, the\u00a0SIRS invited the St. Mary\u2019s Scouts\u00a0to come to the airfield from 10 a.m.\u00a0until 2 p.m. for a fun day with us.<\/p>\n

We provided various models from\u00a0Giant Scale down to mini models for\u00a0demonstrations. The boys were able\u00a0to fly our trainer models with expert\u00a0instructors who can not only teach\u00a0them how to fly, but can rescue them\u00a0if they lose control of the model. In\u00a0addition, we had various model rockets\u00a0and held rocket launches.<\/p>\n

Rege Hall provided the following\u00a0information on the Blacksheep R\/C\u00a0Modelers club in Danville, Indiana, and\u00a0its National Model Aviation Day event.<\/p>\n

Our final total we are giving to\u00a0the Hoosier Veterans Assistance\u00a0Foundation (HVAF) is $6,030. Despite\u00a0wet weather, we did get to fly for a\u00a0couple hours. We started the day with\u00a0a local Boy Scout troop raising the flag\u00a0to the national anthem. Then came the\u00a0rain.<\/p>\n

The rain let up approximately\u00a011:30 a.m. and we were able to get\u00a0in a couple hours of fl ying, including\u00a0demo fl ights. We had fl ight simulators\u00a0running all day and lots of drawings.<\/p>\n

Nearly 90 items were raffled, including\u00a0several ARFs and an RTF Apprentice\u00a015E. Our team served 100 pulled pork\u00a0lunches, sold 1,220 raffl e tickets, and\u00a0received monetary donations from\u00a0several individuals and companies to\u00a0make the $6,030 donation to HVAF.<\/p>\n

Other District VI National Model\u00a0Aviation Day fundraisers that\u00a0I am aware at the time of this\u00a0writing include the Kansas City\u00a0Northern Knights RC Airplane Club\u00a0(Missouri) ($1,123), Ozark Mountain\u00a0Barnstormers (Missouri) ($2,000), and\u00a0the Bolivar Sport Flyers (Missouri)\u00a0($300) to the Disabled American\u00a0Veterans. The Tri County Aero Club\u00a0(Indiana) donated $100 to Wounded\u00a0Warrior Project.<\/p>\n
