I\u2019d like to announce that Dale Arvin\u00a0<\/span>has joined the District VI team as an\u00a0associate vice president. He brings a lot\u00a0of modeling experience to the table and\u00a0is a welcome member of the team. Dale\u00a0has a long history with Scale modeling,\u00a0is a Nats competitor, and a contest\u00a0director, with experience running\u00a0events including the Mint Julip and\u00a0much more.<\/p>\n

If you run into Dale, please\u00a0congratulate him. Thank you, Dale, and\u00a0welcome aboard.<\/p>\n

The following was written by Craig\u00a0Anderson and submitted by Greg\u00a0Ellison, president of the AeroPilots club\u00a0in St Louis.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had the best time this week\u00a0with the AeroPilots! First was our\u00a0meeting at Buder Park on Wednesday,\u00a0then on Saturday morning we got to\u00a0host the boys visiting us from Cub\u00a0Scout Pack 474 of Arnold, Missouri.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy invitation of our club president,\u00a0Greg Ellison, these fine young men\u00a0came to the park excited and eager\u00a0to learn about planes and RC. They\u00a0arrived promptly at 10 a.m. and from\u00a0there our team took over. With the\u00a0aid of a box full of older units, each\u00a0Scout was issued a transmitter that he\u00a0could hold in his hand in order to teach\u00a0him about how flight controls work,\u00a0and our club treasurer, Scott Watts,\u00a0gave the kids interesting and detailed\u00a0instructions on how the gimbal controls\u00a0operated and why, while our club vice\u00a0president, Lance, held a demo plane\u00a0in the right attitude to demonstrate\u00a0for the boys how the plane would be\u00a0affected by each action. That was fun\u00a0to watch!<\/p>\n

\u201cNext the rest of our members, like\u00a0Ed, Beth, Don, George, and Paul,\u00a0gave them instructions on the rules\u00a0we have in place in the park, about\u00a0where to stand, and how the flying\u00a0pattern works. They explained about\u00a0safety, especially about moving props\u00a0and instructions and vocalizations used\u00a0while on the runway for takeoffs and\u00a0landings, so everyone could understand\u00a0the actions of the other pilots flying.<\/p>\n

\u201cFinally, Mort and Craig took on the\u00a0buddy-box duties for the Scouts with\u00a0an ever-ready T-28 trainer, and off to\u00a0the skies they flew. Each boy was given\u00a0a long flight to make his first inputs on\u00a0the live controls. As we expected, some\u00a0boys had left-right issues at first, some\u00a0were overwhelmed by the excitement\u00a0and were watching the wrong plane,\u00a0and some flew the plane right into the\u00a0bright sunlight, but that\u2019s what firsttime\u00a0flights are about!<\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost all of the boys got the hang\u00a0of what they were doing after flying\u00a0a while and got to end their flight by\u00a0doing a big loop in the sky on their\u00a0own, while their proud parents and\u00a0Scout leaders took photos.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe followed with hot dogs on\u00a0the grill that Robert and Emily had\u00a0prepared for everyone, and each boy\u00a0proudly shook our hands with a huge\u00a0\u2018thank-you\u2019 and a smile! It was a proud\u00a0moment for all of us, and we posed for\u00a0some excellent group pictures.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany of us remember belonging to\u00a0Scouts and other great clubs when we\u00a0were kids, and I know these boys will\u00a0remember this day they had with us for\u00a0a long time. Now if you ask who had\u00a0more fun that perfect Saturday morning\u00a0between the club members and the\u00a0Cub Scouts, I\u2019d say it was a perfect tie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just a reminder that it isn\u2019t too late to\u00a0celebrate National Model Aviation Day\u00a0on August 13. If nothing else, just go\u00a0out, fly, and have a good time.<\/p>\n
