Lots of great <\/span>things are going on in\u00a0District VI. I want to share a few.\u00a0Congratulations to Sedalia RC Flyers,\u00a0club number 2818, and the Henry\u00a0County Wright Flyers, club number\u00a01121, for applying for and winning Take\u00a0off And Grow (TAG) Grants in the\u00a0amount of $1,000 each. Additionally,\u00a0District VI clubs that received flying site\u00a0grants this year included the Fort Wayne\u00a0Flying Circuits, receiving $68 and the\u00a0Huntington County Modelers that\u00a0received $119.90.<\/p>\n

The following was submitted by\u00a0Doug Leslie, from the Southeast\u00a0Missouri Modelers Association in Cape\u00a0Girardeau, Missouri.\u00a0\u201cOur club has been working to inform\u00a0our local, state, and national officials\u00a0about the impacts of the recent FAA\u00a0regulations concerning model aircraft.\u00a0Club member Mark McCoy sent letters\u00a0to all of the elected officials informing\u00a0them of these concerns and providing a\u00a0point of contact should they have public\u00a0inquiries or concerns about the hobby.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn response, Sen. Roy Blunt\u2019s office\u00a0had a representative, Caroline Yielding,\u00a0attend our club meeting Thursday\u00a0evening, April 7. She was interested\u00a0in the club\u2019s activities and concerns\u00a0about recent FAA regulations on the\u00a0hobby. She planned to visit our flying\u00a0site, Galaxy Park Model Airfield, on\u00a0Saturday, April 9, 2016, and bring\u00a0her sons to experience flying a trainer\u00a0aircraft. The included photos show\u00a0Caroline with our club officers and\u00a0flying a quadcopter after the meeting.\"modelaviation201607-vi-02\"<\/p>\n

The following comes from Bryan Himes,\u00a0principal at Leeton High School in\u00a0Missouri.<\/p>\n

At the beginning of the school year,\u00a0I spoke to the students about the\u00a0expectations I had for them, as well as\u00a0what I hoped we could do as a school. I\u00a0told them about my desire to give them\u00a0the freedom to explore their passions,\u00a0and if they had an idea to let me know.\u00a0Student Andrew Sites came to me\u00a0and asked if they could have a club to\u00a0learn about and fly drones. This quickly\u00a0morphed into not only wanting to fly\u00a0drones, but also assemble them.<\/p>\n

Since that time, Andrew has gotten\u00a0five other students to join the drone\u00a0club. Through his supervision, the\u00a0students have practiced flying drones on\u00a0computer simulators. Ultimately, they\u00a0have gained the skills needed to fly small\u00a0drones and the quadcopter the students\u00a0put together with some help from\u00a0Robert Sites, Andrew\u2019s father.<\/p>\n

Ideas are wonderful, but being able\u00a0to see them in action takes the efforts\u00a0of other people as well. To help fund\u00a0this endeavor, money was donated by\u00a0our school\u2019s student council as well as\u00a0a gracious donation by an anonymous\u00a0family. The family donated the money\u00a0months ago with no restrictions other\u00a0than asking it to be spent for something\u00a0with a positive purpose.<\/p>\n

Without the generosity of a few, this\u00a0unique learning opportunity would not\u00a0have been possible. Andrew hopes that\u00a0by the end of next year, he will have\u00a0passed along enough knowledge for\u00a0another student to be able to take over\u00a0and help teach others how to assemble\u00a0and fly remote-piloted aircraft (RPAs).<\/p>\n

\"modelaviation201607-vi-03\"All of these students are now\u00a0members of the AMA, and have\u00a0recently been able to visit Whiteman\u00a0Air Force Base and tour the 20th <\/span>Attack\u00a0Squadron Facility. The students and\u00a0their principal were able to gain access\u00a0to the area where they sit and operate\u00a0the MQ-1 Predator, one of the military\u2019s\u00a0RPAs. The students were able to sit in\u00a0the chairs where they fly and learn how\u00a0the RPAs are operated and their purpose\u00a0in the global fight on terrorism.<\/p>\n

It has been a great learning experience\u00a0and the students are excited to build on\u00a0what they have accomplished this year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
