AMA District VI News August 2018

Here we are into August already. I hope your club has plans for National Model Aviation Day on August 11. It would be a great day to take a kid flying!

District VI is very giving. On June 2, 2018, the Lake Ozark Radio Control Society in Eldon, Missouri, had a Cancer Fly that raised more than $3,600 for the cause! Not to be outdone at the other end of the district, the River City Radio Control Club in Louisville, Kentucky, held a flying event that raised $46,411 for the Children’s Hospital! Great job, guys and gals! Thank you!

I hate to do this, but because I have not received any articles or pictures, I am featuring my home club this month. On May 5, 2018, the Kansas City Northern Knights hosted a fun-fly and invited the KC Multi-Rotor (KCMR), a Tier 1 MultiGP club, up to our field for a joint fun-fly.

We had beautiful weather for flying with a mild breeze and warm temperatures. The event included fixed-wing aircraft sharing the field with quad racers. Both clubs had a great turnout with 28 pilots signed up and the Knights gaining two new members.

Although the Northern Knights club had several airplanes in the air, we also took time to buddy box with anyone who wanted to get the feeling of RC flying. While we were flying, the KCMR members got started racing. There were several rounds of qualifiers, but when it came down to the finals, the winner for the day was Josh Waldron. Fastest lap went to Brian Miller with a 13.264-second lap.

The KCMR club also had a raffle drawing for a Spectrum DX6e with a new receiver, an AMA travel mug that I donated a Dromida Twin Explorer glider, and a District VI patch donated by Darren Pierce. Zach Rice from the KCMR was the winner.

The Northern Knights also provided hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, and drinks. A special thanks to club members’ wives Kathy Pierce and Darla Barnhart for providing wonderful sides of baked beans and pasta salad. No one went home hungry!

The Northern Knights want to thank the following club members who helped run the event: Walter and Ashley Beringer, Mike Coyne, Dave Stadler, Steve Ramey, and Darren Pierce. Also, thank you to the KCMR club, Kevin Worley, Matt King, Zac Rice, and Isaac Black.

Kevin Worley, KCMR president, stated, “The Knights have a great field. They are one of the most welcoming clubs in the Kansas City area. We look forward to having more joint events this year and in the years to come.”

If you enjoyed this month’s submission and would like to see an event from your own club here, email me a short write-up with the word “magazine” in the subject line and attach a few high-quality digital pictures!
