Here we are—May Day is just around the corner. Grass is green once again, and the mower is gassed up and ready to go. Also, I have all of my models dusted off, maintenance performed, and ready to fly once again on a regular schedule, instead of wishing weather was good enough to fly!
I have a treat for you this month. Dave McDonald from the Lake Ozark Radio Control Society (LORCS) in Eldon, Missouri, sent me the following write-up on his club’s fundraising event! The pictures are from photographer Mandy Smith. Thank you Dave and Mandy for contributing to this column.
On Saturday, June 3, 2017, the LORCS, in cooperation with the Curves Relay For Life team, held a benefit fun-fly at Harrison Field in Eldon, Missouri, which is located in the heart of the Lake of the Ozarks area. Although LORCS is a fairly small club of roughly 60 members, we managed to raise $3,030 for the Relay For Life division of the American Cancer Society.
The fun-fly attracted 34 registered pilots and more than 100, who all gathered to enjoy a day of flying, camaraderie, a great raffle, and good food. Lunch and drinks were provided for the registered pilots by several local Lake of the Ozarks area businesses including Bandana’s Bar-B-Q of Osage Beach, which supplied pulled pork; Kentucky Fried Chicken of Eldon, which supplied fried chicken; Andy’s Hickory Pit BBQ of Eldon, which supplied baked beans; and U.S. Machinery Moving, Inc. of Eldon, which gave a generous donation.
The flying weather was nearly perfect. A variety of aircraft participated in the event, including military warbirds, scale civilian aircraft, jets, sport airplanes, extreme aerobatic models, helicopters, and even drones.
The next LORCS Relay For Life Benefit Fun Fly is scheduled for Saturday, June 2, 2018, and everybody is welcome to attend. For more information about upcoming LORCS events, visit www.lorcs.com, or contact a LORCS officer at info@lorcs.com.
If you enjoyed this month’s submission, and would like to see an event from your own club here, email me a short write-up with the word “magazine” in the subject line, and attach a few high-quality digital pictures!
