AMA District VI News September 2017

Summer is flying by rapidly with lots of activities. Camp AMA is over and our District VI-sponsored attendee, Samuel Maas, said he had a great time at camp and can’t wait to go again. If you know of a Youth member who would be a good candidate for Camp AMA 2018, please email me at flyrcam@gmail.com with contact information, and a short write-up about why you feel he or she should be chosen. Camp AMA is typically held the first full week in June.

There are many great events that go on in our district. The Rend Lake RC Club in Ina, Illinois, recently used Take off And Grow (TAG) grant money to help fund its Kids Camp. Visit www.rendlakercclub.com/singlepost/2017/06/10/an-rc-kids-campsuccess to read about this huge success and partnership with the local Rend Lake College. There will be more to come about this event.

I was able to attend the Kansas City Northern Knights Airplanes Galore TAG gathering. Although it was windy, there was a lot of flying and a good turnout.

I also spent an afternoon at the Whiteman Air Force Base open house with the Mid-Missouri Modelers of Warrensburg. The club had a nice booth set up with flight simulators and a great static display.

The following comes from Curtis Adams, a senior advisor on the Lexington Model Airplane Club board.

For the last 12 years, the Lexington Model Airplane Club (LMAC) has held a fly-in called the Kentucky Fall Classic that continues to grow. One reason for this is that the club supports its local community by donating a portion of the proceeds from the Fall Classic to local charities.

Untitled12LMAC club members Curtis Adams, Bob Stewart, and Dan Thompson met with Jenny Wurzback, executive director of Easter Seals Cardinal Hill and another Cardinal Hill representative to make the annual donation.

In 2016, the club members donated $1,000 each to the Easter Seals Cardinal Hill and the Kids Cancer Alliance. Both organizations are well respected in the community and deserving of this donation. LMAC has become a community partner with Cardinal Hill and this was communicated to the Cardinal Hill family through the recent newsletter publication.

The 14th Annual Lexington Kentucky Fall Classic will be held September 14- 17, 2017. Giant Scale specifications apply. There will be open flying on Thursday and Sunday. The facilities include a 650 foot asphalt and grass runway. Camper hookups are $10 per night and there is a landing fee donation. The pilots’ dinner is Saturday evening with a noon demonstration on Saturday.

Thank you all for the great things happening in District VI. Happy flying!

Randy Cameron
Vice President District VI
