June has been another fast month, starting with the Wings for Kids show in Louisville, Kentucky. As far as I know, this is probably one of the largest charity fundraisers put on in District VI.
This two-day show is held by the River City Radio Controllers at the club’s flying site in Tom Sawyer State Park. It raises more than $20,000 a year for the Kosair Children’s Hospital. Throughout the years, this has amounted to more than $250,000. Pretty impressive.
The show is well managed by Contest Director Doug Bailey, with a lot of help from many club members, and volunteers from the hospital as well. It draws several thousand spectators during the two-day period.
We’ve been lucky enough to attend the event for the last three years with the AMA Education trailers to help out. It kept my wife and me busy that weekend with many adults and children alike getting the feel for what it is like to fly an RC airplane.
The following report comes from John Earlywine. The Fort Wayne Flying Circuits club kicked off its flying season events with the May Fun Fly on May 21, 2016.
Thirty-nine pilots from four states, along with many visitors, enjoyed the great weather and the flying. This was the club’s first event with an FPV quadcopter racing course, which attracted a lot of interest. A large-screen TV was set up, providing cockpit views from up to four of the racers. Additionally, the low-level, Giant Scale acrobatic flights by Joe Smith and Mike Egan were another highlight with everyone present.
Photos are courtesy of Dave Kern. Just a touch of news. On June 21, 2016, the FAA released its rules for small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS). The good thing is that within that document, there is still an exemption for modelers who follow the safety guidelines of a community-based organization such as the AMA.
Stay tuned and check the AMA website and blog often for additional information.
Happy landings everyone!
