On any given Tuesday, Wednesday or Sunday, the Berks County Barnstormers meet to fly their model planes in western Berks, as long as the wind isn’t too strong. The group is one of a small number of local model plane clubs, including the Flying Dutchmen Aeromodelers and the 222 Flying Club.<\/p>\n

Club members say they enjoy the challenge of building and flying replica airplanes. Some of the planes are simply made of foam with an electric or gas motor. Others have lots of extra features, wingspans of up to 7 feet and the ability to travel faster than cars.<\/p>\n

Now he flies any one of his dozen planes with the group.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The Barnstormers were created in 1960 by Jack Rolins and Warren Bingaman. They connected with the Academy of Model Aeronautics<\/a>, and the group now has about 50 members.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The Barnstormers used to meet in the Bernville area but had to find a new site about two years ago when the land was sold. They now lease a field just off Route 422 in Lower Heidelberg Township near Conrad Weiser High School.<\/p>\n
