Hosted by the Alpine Leisure Pilots Society, the event will bring dozens of pilots from across Michigan to fly their scale-model airplanes, each equipped for aquatic takeoffs and landings. (Courtesy photo \/ August 21, 2012)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last year\u2019s splash-in drew 40 pilots and more than 60 planes.<br \/>\nThe event is not a competition; rather pilots are welcome to do what they want, including aerobatics, loops and spins. Such moves sometimes land pilots into trouble and dunks are common. Crashes, which destroy planes, also can happen.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re looking for it to be bigger and better than ever,\u201d said organizer Michael Curtis.<br \/>\nThe event runs Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Pilots are more likely to be flying in light winds since waves can swamp their planes.
