Marshall Stanton and Art Klenda share a passion for flying, but they remain firmly grounded.
Armed with electronic remote controls that can command their aircraft to perform all sorts of tricks, they are members of the Smoky Hill Model Flying Club who hone their skills periodically on a field in southern Saline County. “There’s enjoyment is just going to the field. We have a pleasant location,” said Stanton, 76, a retired president of Kansas Wesleyan University. He’s been involved in the hobby for more than 30 years.
“It keeps me busy, out of trouble,” said Klenda, 56, who works in construction. “I like the freedom of flying a plane,” he said. “It’s just a good sport.”
Flying is just one of “several dimensions” of the radio-controlled aircraft game, and all of them will be on display Sept. 8 for the club’s Giant Scale Fly-In. “I like building (planes) from scratch and flying them, too,” said Klenda, the club secretary. His garage in south Salina is home to several of the miniature aircraft.
One of them, a single-wing Yak 54, will be raffled off at the fly-in, along with other prizes.
