If you always dreamed of piloting an airplane but can’t stomach speeding miles above the earth, Joe Cherne suggests an intriguing alternative: remote-controlled model aircraft.
“It gives you an understanding of the aerodynamics of an aircraft, which are the same whether it’s a model or the real thing,” he said.
If anyone knows about real airplanes and their model counterparts, it’s Cherne.
He’s a former U.S. Navy pilot who started building and flying RC planes several years ago as a way to bond with his 28-year-old son, Adam.
“Not only that, I was approaching retirement age, so I wanted something to do with my time that I found interesting,” Cherne said.
If you’re similarly interested in flying but aren’t comfortable leaving terra firma, check out the Palos R/C Flying Club’s Giant Scale Air Show, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 2 at Morrill Meadow Flying Field, 107th Street and LaGrange Road, Palos Hills.
