Gaylord HeraldTimes.com – The seventh annual RC Model Splash-In will touch down at Otsego Lake County Park this weekend. Hosted by the Alpine Leisure Pilots Society, the event will bring dozens of pilots from across Michigan to fly their scale-model airplanes, each equipped for aquatic takeoffs and landings. Some planes are as large as one-fourth scale, with wing spans of 5 or 6 feet.
Last year’s splash-in drew 40 pilots and more than 60 planes.
The event is not a competition; rather pilots are welcome to do what they want, including aerobatics, loops and spins. Such moves sometimes land pilots into trouble and dunks are common. Crashes, which destroy planes, also can happen.
“We’re looking for it to be bigger and better than ever,” said organizer Michael Curtis.
The event runs Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Pilots are more likely to be flying in light winds since waves can swamp their planes. Light rain won’t stop the planes from flying.
