The Academy of Model Aeronautics has been chosen as the 2013 recipient of the Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce’s Outstanding Contribution to Education award. Several members of the AMA’s staff attended the 119th Muncie-Delaware County Chamber’s annual meeting and accepted the award on behalf of the organization. The award recognizes a teacher, administrator, organization, or company that has made significant contribution to education or workforce development in Muncie, Indiana, and Delaware County. The Academy supports the local educational community through programming provided by AMA’s Education department and the National Model Aviation Museum. AMA continues to focus on education. A three-member staff works to develop educational programming that encourages learning through this fun and interactive hobby. They have partnered with several organizations, including NASA, the Civil Air Patrol, and the Alcoa Foundation, to develop new, innovative programs for aviation education. The AMA also partnered with WFYI, a local television station, to develop “Wings Over Indiana,” an Emmy award-winning TV special. In 2011, the department’s developments were recognized by the National Aeronautic Association with a Brewer Trophy for exemplary accomplishment and collaborative work with numerous aerospace organizations to assist students, teachers and community leaders in understanding the science, skill and beauty of flight. Every year the National Model Aviation Museum, one of the world’s largest of its kind, offers free community events designed for families. The museum also continues to develop new exhibits to encourage regular visitation. The museum has worked with other local organizations, including the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, to provide model airplane displays that showcase the hobby and teach others about model aeronautics. As a proud supporter of several local nonprofit organizations, the Academy hopes to continue sharing the fun and educational aspects of model aviation with the community.
