The Academy of Model Aeronautics gives away scholarship money every year to youth members who are entering their first year of college. This year we had 19 applicants apply. Out of these 19 applicants we awarded five students scholarships totaling $39,500.00. It was a tough decision this year because there were so many great choices. Thanks to all of the youth members that applied. Below is a little bit of information about each one of our winners and the amount they were awarded. Congratulations winners we can’t wait to see what the future has in store for you!

- City/State: Wallingford, Connecticut
- Muhlenberg College: Planning double major – Physics (as part of a joint program with Columbia University) and Theater
- Modeling Experience: Top-ranked winner of the Telford Award for participation and championships in more than 100 local, national and international competitions. Medaled in numerous individual and team events, including Junior and Senior National Championships, the NATS (2005 – 2011), as well as multiple events in Junior World Championships (2007 – 2011).
- School Activities and Community Service: Math Team member; member of a school-based Science-Inquiry Group that carries out scientific research and investigations; editor of annual science journal; member of student government, varsity golf team; member of multiple choral ensembles and numerous leading roles in dramatic productions, including director and stage manager; school-community service for events and tours.

- City/State: Melbourne Beach, Florida
- The Florida State University: Mechanical Engineering
- Modeling Experience: Began first with an electric “foamie” and, eventually, a glow-powered ARF to learn different engine set-ups and maintenance; kit-built a .40 P-51 in the colors of his die-cast “Old Crow” flow by “Bud” in World War II (won “Model of the Month” - approximately 300 hours construction time) in his AMA club; continues to perfect his skills with Parkzone F4U Corsair and Sukhoi Su-26.
- School Activities and Community Service: National Honor Society; tutors math students; helps with school events, tours, lead guitar with local band; volunteers through his church for community service projects; student at Embry Riddle University Summer Academy for a one-week program focusing on full-scale flight instruction.
- City/State: Bishop, Georgia
- Purdue University: Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering
- Modeling Experience: Flying with his dad since 3rd grade, from a Sig Senior Trainer, to a powered glider, to a 3-D aerobat, to a variety of electric models, leading to a Beechcraft Baron he designed and built from scratch, using a CAD program).
- School Activities and Community Service: President of the National Honor Society; participant in Math League; German Club; created a high-school out-door classroom for his Eagle Scout project; piano student for eleven years; multiple community service projects including feeding the homeless, participant in “Relay for Life” and “Prevent Child Abuse/Athens” (GA) project.
- City/State: Hawkins, Texas
- Hillsdale College: Politics
- Modeling Experience: Began with an RTF Super Cub, moved on to design his own flat-winged foam flying wing. Enjoys flying 3-D “foamies” and has designed and built more than 30 aircraft. With the support of club members, he has stick-time on gas-powered models, including giant scale planes. Has participated in a number of fun-flys around the Southeastern U.S.
- School Activities and Community Service: As a “home-schooled” student, Mathew has traveled year-round for six years to 31 states in the family RV. He has attended dozens of political meetings and rallies across the country, and a week-long congressional simulation camp, where he was elected vice president. His primary community service project was raising $1400 for an automated external defibrillator for a local community center.

- Brigham Young University: Mechanical Engineering
- Modeling Experience: Began with plastic model P-51 at eight years old. At 12 years old began flying an Edge 540, moved on to a “Flying W”, a foam Sukhoi Su-31, and a foam Cessna 185 (acknowledging that he got the airfoil wrong and it flew like an injured bird!). He moved on to a Challenger II biplane and his current project is a C-123 electric-powered cargo plane.
- School Activities and Community Service: School baseball team for 3 years, 7 years on the Pacific Ballroom Dance Team. With his partner, he recently won the High School Division 1st place award at the National Amateur DanceSport Championship. He placed first with his team in SkillsUSA engineering competition in human-powered vehicles and bridge-building. In addition, he has achieved the rank of Eagle in Scouting.
