AMA District V News May 2016

The following report comes from District V Associate Vice President Don Wise.

On February 20, 2016, the Flying Tigers of Scranton, South Carolina, held a combination fly-in, swap shop, and chili cook-off. With two flightlines, the 64 pilots had plenty of room for flying.

With partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s, it was a pleasant day. The aircraft ranged from small electrics to turbine powered airplanes.

The Flying Tigers had free drawings for the youngsters and a raffle for more than $5,000 worth of RC aircraft and accessories for everyone else. Tony Tuner was the event contest director who made sure things ran smoothly and the club members made the guests feel welcome.

The 2016 Southeastern Model Show, hosted by the Georgia Aircraft Modelers Association, Inc., in Perry, Georgia, was well attended this year by thousands of modelers and hundreds of vendors. I believe this was one of the best trade shows I’ve seen.

The AMA had a booth where representatives answered questions, renewed memberships, and sold the latest AMA merchandise. This year District V held its first—and what I would call successful—membership meeting on the Saturday morning of the show. Nearly 100 people attended.

AMA President Bob Brown gave an insightful FAA regulations summary. Ilona Maine, director of Safety and Member Benefits at AMA Headquarters, explained our insurance coverage and answered questions about field and member coverage alongside Flying Site Assistance Coordinator and Technical Director Tony Stillman.

To cap it off, a BNF T-28, donated by BL Prosser from Helen’s Hobbies, was given away as a door prize. The meeting was a great success

Stay tuned to this column in the following months as I highlight each associate vice president in our district. The weather is getting warmer and the time has changed––more daylight hours to fly. Get your models out, grab a kid, and get to the field. Happy flying all!
