Retired Astronaut and AMA Ambassador Hoot Gibson to speak at Champaign Aviation Museum

Original Story Published on Springfield News-Sun online by Andrew McGinn

Academy of Model Aeronautics national ambassador Hoot Gibson will be a guest of honor and speaker at the Champaign Aviation Museum on April 13. Gibson, who has launched off an aircraft carrier more than 300 times and flown into space five times, will be speaking during the museum’s first fundraising gala dinner, at 5:30.

Dave Shiffer, chairman of the Champaign Aviation Museum, is just as thrilled that the former fighter pilot and NASA astronaut accepted an offer to visit Urbana next month. “It’s just amazing,” Shiffer said. “I was overjoyed he was able to do it and wanted to do it.”

The gala has been organized to raise funds to support the collection of airworthy vintage planes. The night includes dinner, music and dancing, plus a flyover of the museum’s restored B-25 Mitchell, piloted by Shiffer himself, if the weather cooperates.
